⚘ A Closer Look

A name with a little shine.

Hippophae is often traced to Greek words meaning “horse” and “shine,” from the story that sea buckthorn was fed to horses in ancient Greece for glossy coats.

One berry. Two different oils.

Sea buckthorn produces oil in both its seed and its fleshy pulp. The seed oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, while the pulp oil is known for omega-7. Same fruit, surprisingly different character.

✧ Good to Know

Mind light fabrics. Its natural color can tint very light fabrics, so let it absorb fully before dressing.

Store it cool and dark. Its delicate omega-3 fatty acids oxidize more quickly than most oils, so keep it tightly capped, away from heat and light.

Patch test first. Reactions are uncommon but possible, especially on sensitive skin.

✦ Common Questions

What’s the difference between sea buckthorn seed oil and fruit oil?

They come from different parts of the same berry. Seed oil is pressed from the seeds and is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Fruit (pulp) oil comes from the fleshy berry and is known for omega-7. We use cold-pressed, virgin seed oil.

Why is sea buckthorn oil orange?

Its warm golden to deep-orange color comes from natural carotenoids, the same pigments that make the berries glow. Virgin, unrefined oils like ours keep more of that natural color.

Where does sea buckthorn grow?

Sea buckthorn is native to Europe and Asia, from windswept coastlines to the mountains of China and the Himalayas. It thrives in poor, sandy soil, partly because its roots partner with bacteria that fix nitrogen.
