⚘ A Closer Look

Not an essential oil.

Vanilla isn’t steam distilled. Instead, it’s commonly used as a CO₂ extract, obtained from cured vanilla pods using pressurized carbon dioxide.

A one-day window.

Each flower opens for one day only. If it isn’t pollinated during that brief window, it will never produce a vanilla pod.

The fragrance comes later.

Fresh green pods have little scent. Their aroma develops through months of curing.

Pollinated by hand.

Most commercial vanilla is hand-pollinated, using a technique discovered in 1841 by Edmond Albius, a 12-year-old enslaved boy on the island of Réunion.

✧ Good to Know

Real vs. synthetic. Many “vanilla” scents rely on synthetic vanillin alone. True vanilla extract carries hundreds of aromatic compounds, giving it a richer, rounder scent.

Patch test first. Vanilla is gentle for most people, but reactions are possible, especially on sensitive skin.

✦ Common Questions

Is vanilla an essential oil?

No. Vanilla isn’t steam distilled. Its aroma is captured as a CO₂ extract, an absolute or an oleoresin. We use a CO₂ extract, made from cured vanilla pods using pressurized carbon dioxide.

Why is vanilla so expensive?

Each flower must be pollinated by hand during its one-day window. The pods then take about nine months to mature and several more months to cure. Most of the world’s supply comes from Madagascar, so weather there can also affect prices.

What’s the difference between vanilla and tonka bean?

Tonka bean is the seed of a South American tree, Dipteryx odorata. It smells warm and sweet, much like vanilla, with almond and hay-like notes. True vanilla comes from the cured fruit pod of the vanilla orchid.
